Men's basketball defeats Covenant in OT for first win of season

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - It took overtime, but the men's basketball team secured their first win of the 2022-23 campaign with a 108-103 decision against Covenant.

The Panthers built a seven point lead in the first nine and a half minutes of the game and were up 21-14 with 10:32 left in the first half. Over the next four and a half minutes, Covenant erased the GU lead and managed to go up by nine at 34-25 with 5:52 to go in the first half.

Greenville battled back and outscored the Scots over the last six minutes to take a 46-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, it only took GU three minutes to push the advantage to 13 points at 57-44. However Covenant would not give up, chipping away at the GU lead and sending the game to overtime at 92-all.

The Panthers outdistanced Covenant 16-11 in the extra period.

Jarred Johnson ended as GU's top scorer with 25 points. He made 6-of-13 field goal attempts, 2-of-4 three pointers, and 11-of-13 free throws.

Travis Dickey was second on the team with 22 points.

Joseph Craig ended as the GU leading rebounder with six, and he joined Kaidyn Johnson with a team-high three assists.

GU forced 27 turnovers and came up with 15 steals, led by J. Johnson with four.

The Panthers (1-8) will host Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m.
