Men's basketball tops Blackburn to clinch program's fifth SLIAC league championship

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The men's basketball team defeated Blackburn 101-98 on Saturday afternoon to clinch a share the SLIAC regular season championship for the first time since the 2017-18 squad won the regular season and tournament championships en route to their first NCAA tournament appearance.

The Panthers led 48-40 at halftime, and the lead changed hands nine times over the course of the afternoon. Greenville trailed by nine with six minutes to play, but the resilent Panthers came back and secured the win by scoring 22 of the game's final 32 points.

Vincent Rodriguez and Kiarie Patrick both surpassed 20 points in the outing. Rodriguez finished with 24 points, and Patrick posted 20 points in a double-double effort including 11 rebounds.

Ja'Rod Webb managed a 14 point afternoon, and Grimmett Glenn scored 12 points.

Patrick, Webb, Jamie Calmese, and Rodriguez all tallied four assists, and Rodriguez led the Panthers with five steals.

The Panthers (18-7, 13-5 SLIAC) will travel to Fontbonne on Thursday night for a SLIAC semifinal game at 5:30 p.m. against Spalding, Webster, or Blackburn.
