Men's gymnastics opens with second place at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The men's gymnastics team opened their inaugural season at Michigan where they placed second overall among the three teams with a score of 373.100. The No. 14-ranked Panther team bettered No. 15 Simpson, the other first year program by over 30 points while finishing 27.500 points behind the nation's No. 2 Michigan team.

The Panthers had some notable performances in the event. Despite Michigan taking the best scores in each event, GU had a number of scores that ensured that Michigan would not sweep the top five overall positions in every event.

Greenville's most impressive marks occurred in the parallel bars where Kevin Laurino and Ricky Mays were third and fourth. Laurino contributed a score of 13.450, and Mays tallied a total of 13.100.

Jacob Foster posted an impressive finish in the pommel, giving Greenville a score of 13.100 for fourth place.

In the vault, Major Bain provided the Panthers with a total of 14.000, ending in the fifth position.

During the floor routine, GU's Zach Connelly and Aaron Chandler tied for fifth place with scores of 12.400.

Mays and Ryan Barela posted fifth in the horizontal bar with totals of 12.700.

Ethan Poole and Nicky Franz gave the Panthers sixth place scores in the rings with marks of 13.050.

The Panthers did not enter anybody in the All-Around competition.

Next week, the Panthers travel to Illinois-Chicago for the Windy City Invitational at Navy Pier on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
