Ricky Mays represents men's gymnastics in Saturday NCAA finals, ranks 28th in vault

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. - The men's gymnastics team wrapped up their inaugural season at the NCAA championships at Penn State in the NCAA qualifying meet on Friday and the finals on Saturday.  Greenville vaulter Ricky Mays qualified for the national finals on Saturday in the vault and placed 28th overall.

Mays was the featured star for Greenville, taking sixth in session two of the all-around competition on Friday night with scores of 13.333 (floor excercise), 11.533 (pommel horse), 13.133 (still rings), 13.000 (vault), 13.433 (parallel bars), and 12.066 (high bar) to finish with an all-around total of 77.698.

Among Greenville's other competitors, Zach Connelly was 23rd in the second session of the floor exercise with a total of 13.366, and Charlie Kramer came in 29th with a total of 13.166. Mays posted the 24th best score of 13.333 in Friday's floor exercise session.

In the high bar, Jacob Foster finished 23rd in his session, posting a point total of 12.433. Mays placed 31st in the session with a score of 12.066, and Koby Cantu matched Mays with 12.066.

Mays and Cantu also participated in Friday's parallel bars competition. Mays received 13.000 points to place 23rd, and Cantu was 28th with 12.766.

Foster competed in Friday's second session in the pommel and ranked 25th with a score of 12.466 while Major Bain earned 27th with 12.433.  Mays was 34th with 11.533.

Mays, Foster, and Nicky Franz represented GU in Friday's second session of the still rings. Mays was 23rd with 13.133, and Foster ranked 26th with a total of 12.900. Franz posted 12.533 points for 28th.

In the vault, Mays received the bulk of GU's attention. He was fifth in his Friday session with a score of 14.633 which allowed him to advance to Saturday's finals. Michael Avery also participated in Friday's vault and posted a score of 13.934, and Bain was in the Friday session, placing 35th with 12.866.

In the vault finals on Saturday, Mays collected a score of 14.233 and ranked 28th at the end of the competition.

The Panthers have concluded their season, and they will next compete in January in their second season.
