Men's soccer records 2-1 opening night win

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team received a game-tying goal from newcomer Petter Meinseth in the match's 78th minute and a game-winning golden goal off the foot of 2020-21 SLIAC all-conference team returner Luis Duran in the eighth minute of overtime as the Panthers opened the 2021 season with a 2-1 overtime win over Rose-Hulman at Francis Field on Wednesday night.

Rose-Hulman managed to hold the Panthers offense at bay in the first half, outshooting the Greenville unit 12-1, and taking a 1-0 lead. After some tactical adjustments at the half, Greenville narrowed the shot deficit to 8-5 over the remainder of the contest and pushed two shots past the Rose-Hulman goalkeeper for the win.

Meinseth worked through some traffic in the box, taking a pass from Pedro Gonzalez-Moro and pushing it with his left foot into the opposite corner to tie the match at 1-all.

In overtime, Duran received a pass from Benn Jane, spun and slot it past the goalkeeper for the win.

"Rose-Hulman is going to be the most disciplined and well-organized team we will play all year," said head coach Chris Swift. "We talked at halftime about how we needed to get the ball in the center of their defense. As we started to do that in the second half, the chances came and eventually the goal."

Facing 20 shots from Rose-Hulman, Pedro Vebber collected five saves in his debut.

Duran supplied two of Greenville's six shots.

The Panthers (1-0) travel to North Park for a Saturday match before a return to Francis Field for a contest on Tuesday, Sept. 7 against Illinois College.
