Men's soccer threats thwarted by Fontbonne in 2-1 loss

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The men’s soccer team dropped their first conference match to Fontbonne on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers outshot the Griffins 23-14 but ended up losing 2-1.

Fontbonne scored in the 9th and 18th minutes, quickly making it a 2-0 game.

Greenville was behind at halftime but managed to score in the second half. Gabriel Sule had an unassisted goal in the 59th minute. Sule cut Fontbonne’s lead in half with a 2-1 score.

Neither team scored again in the remaining thirty minutes, resulting in a loss for the Panthers.

Pablo Valverde, Edgar Barrientos, and Jose Elias Fernandez were all offensive game leaders for Greenville. All three players had four shots. Valverde’s four shots were all on goal.

Jaime Sainz was in the net for the Panthers and had six saves.

The Panthers (3-6) host Lyon at Francis Field on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
