Men's tennis heading to NCAA national tournament to face Illinois Tech

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's tennis team continues to accomplish feats for the first time. The NCAA announced on Monday that the Greenville University men's tennis team has qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament as the only "Pool B" team awarded a position among the national tournament field.

In Greenville's final year before joining the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference as an affiliate member, Greenville finished the year perfect against conference teams and knocked off perennial conference champion Principia in the regular season and conference tournament.

The Panthers are led by depth in the lineup with the addition of three players - Andres Sanchez, Rafael Rodriguez, and Clark Kent - that allowed GU to play two of last season's top players - Luke Motsinger and Austin Burkhart - deeper in the lineup.

The Panthers accrued match records of 149-36 split between singles and doubles.

Motsinger led GU with an 18-3 record in singles, and Kent was right behind with a singles mark of 17-4. Burkhart posted a record of 13-4 in singles.

Sanchez went 12-2 from the No. 1 singles position, and Rodriguez and Thibaut Tignee were each 11-3.

Julian Delrez and Matt Lehr went a perfect 8-0 and 5-0, respectively when head coach Brett Brannon inserted them in the lineup.

Greenville doubles team of Sanchez and Rodriguez were 9-2 in No. 1 doubles, and Kent and Motsinger paired together to go 10-6.

The Panthers (19-2) will play Illinois Tech in the first round with the winner assigned a date with University Athletic Association representative Chicago in the second round.
