Indoor track and field competes in Carthage qualifier

KENOSHA, Wis. - The men's and women's track and field teams sent four competitors to the Carthage Firebird Finale on Friday.

In men's competition, only Wesley Kile competed, but he finished first in the pole vault with a clearing of 4.56 meters (14 feet-11.5 inches). His best attempt of the season ended at 4.70 meters (15-5), and that placed him 30th in NCAA Division III.

The women sent three student athletes - Sara Yakana, Laila Graham, and Kenzie Kurdys - to the Carthage meet.

Yakana achieved a best attempt of 5.76 meters (18-10.75) in the long jump for second place, and Graham ranked fourth with a distance of 5.56 meters (18-3).

Yakana participated in the triple jump as well where her distance of 11.50 meters (37-8.75) placed third.

Kurdys entered the pole vault where she placed fifth with a height of 3.38 meters (11-1).

Next weekend, Yakana and Talahiva Talanoa will represent the women's track and field program at the NCAA Division III indoor national championships. Yakana achieved the eighth best mark of the D-III season in the long jump, and Talanoa secured the 10th best position in the weight throw.
