Softball opens 2022 season with losses at Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The softball team began their 2022 campaign with a doubleheader defeat at Rhodes. Greenville dropped game one 10-1 before a 14-7 defeat in game two.

Rhodes established a 4-0 lead in the first inning with back-to-back homers and added two runs in the third before the Panthers scored their first run in the top of the fourth.

In Greenville's time at bat in the fourth inning, Desirae Yost doubled and was driven in on an RBI single from Mia Boyd.

Rhodes tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth and held Greenville without a run in the top of the fifth to win a shortened game.

GU's starting pitcher was Alison Klaus, and she worked three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and one walk. Chesleigh Pugh permitted four runs on three hits and two walks in one inning.

In game two the Panthers established a two-run lead in the top of the second, benefitting from a two-out rally that plated Morgan Wendling who had doubled and pinch runner Megan Chapman.

Rhodes added seven runs in the bottom of the third, and GU added three in the top of the fourth on Kaitlyn Carlson's three-run homer. The Panthers added two in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Emma Funk and an RBI groundout by Wendling to cut the deficit to 10-7.

However, the Lynx went up 11-7 in the bottom of the fifth and 14-7 in the bottom of the sixth and held the Panthers scoreless.

Wendling finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Boyd was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, on eight hits and three walks.

Sydney Lasher worked two innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, and Taylor Weiss pitched two innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits.

The Panthers (0-2) will stay in Memphis for a doubleheader against Oberlin on Saturday.
