Softball drops doubleheader against Oberlin

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The softball team completed their trip to Memphis with a doubleheader sweep by Oberlin on Saturday. The Panthers suffered a walk-off loss 3-2 in game one, followed by a 9-1 defeat in six innings of game two.

The Panthers fell behind by one run in the third inning of game one, but GU took the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs.

Kaitlyn Carlson delivered an RBI single to score Emma Funk for the first run, and then Erin Toole later scored on a wild pitch.

Oberlin tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth and added the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Leadoff batter Madi Case went 2-for-4 for the Panthers with a double.

Starting pitcher Alison Klaus worked 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned on five hits and four walks. She struck out two.

Chesleigh Pugh was saddled with the loss, despite only allowing one run on three hits also in 3.1 innings.

Game two was a struggle for the Panthers as they were limited to just three hits.

Oberlin established a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and extended the lead to 7-0 with five runs in the top of the fourth.

Morgan Wendling hit a solo home run for Greenville in the bottom of the fourth.

Oberlin gave themselves the cushion they needed to shorten the game with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Once again, Case delivered two hits for Greenville in the game with a 2-for-3 performance.

Mia Boyd started in the circle and allowed seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits and one walk over 3.2 innings.

Taylor Weiss finished the game, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits and one walk.

The Panthers (0-4) continue their season with a trip to Maryville (Tennessee) on Friday.
