Softball defeats Maryville in one of two at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The softball team completed their second doubleheader of their trip to Tennessee with a win and loss on Saturday in Tennessee. GU earned a 5-2 win in game one, followed by a 10-2 defeat in game two.

In game one, a four run fourth inning highlighted by an RBI double from Mia Boyd, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Taylor Weiss, and a two-run RBI single from Alison Klaus gave Greenville a lead that Maryville could not overcome.

The Panthers added a fifth run on an RBI double by Emma Funk in the seventh.

Melissa Bernal pitched the complete game for GU, allowing two runs on 10 hits. She walked one and struck out two.

Morgan Wendling, Desirae Yost, Boyd, and Klaus all had two hits for GU

In game two, Greenville received an RBI double from Yost in the third and an RBI single off the bat of Katie Woodruff in the fourth to only trail by one moving into the sixth inning.

In Maryville's half of the sixth inning, they came up with seven runs.

Klaus pitched 3.1 innings, permitting three runs on five hits.

Weiss permitted seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings, and Sydney Lasher capped the game with a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.

Madi Case went 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot for Greenville.

The Panthers (1-7) will play in Chesterfield, Mo., in a tournament hosted by Fontbonne on Saturday.
