Softball splits day one in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, Fla. - The softball team opened Spring Break play with a 4-1 loss to Saint Joseph (Conn.) but followed the setback with a 7-2 win over Keystone.

After two scoreless innings in their game against Saint Joseph, the Panthers scored a run in the top of the third to gain the early 1-0 lead. Morgan Wendling provided an RBI triple to give GU the 1-0 advantage.

The Greenville lead was short-lived, and St. Joseph scored two runs in the bottom of the third to go on top 2-1. SJU added an insurance tally in the fourth and sixth innings.

Mia Boyd produced a 2-for-3 outing to lead the Panthers in hits.

Wendling, Jaclyn Belzer, Taylor Weiss, and Erin Toole also singled.

Melissa Bernal pitched all six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks. She struck out five.

Game two went the Panthers way from the outset as Greenville raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning.

Desirae Yost put the first run on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly, and Boyd and Emma Funk delivered back-to-back one-run doubles.

After Katie Woodruff walked with the bases loaded, Wendling posted her second hit of the first inning - a two-run single - to put the Panthers up 6-0.

Keystone scored twice in the second inning, and Kaitlyn Carlson provided an RBI single in the fourth inning to award the Panthers their final run.

In the circle, Alison Klaus recored her first win of the season, working a seven inning complete game and allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits and three walks while collecting two strikeouts.

The Panthers (3-9) will return to action on Thursday against Medaille and Albertus Magnus.
