Softball hosts Spalding in SLIAC Game of the Week

The two highest-scoring teams in SLIAC softball will meet in this week's SLIAC Game of the Week. Spalding has crossed the plate 112 times this season while Greenville has scored 89 times. The two teams will match up this Saturday, Apr. 2, in Greenville for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

Spalding begins the week on a two-game winning streak having won its conference-opening doubleheader against Blackburn over the weekend. They will face Fontbonne on Wednesday before heading to Greenville on Saturday. The Golden Eagles have the league's best offense this season, averaging 7.0 runs per game with a .342 batting average and 51 stolen bases.

Spalding's offense is bolstered by three hitters batting over .400 this spring. Jessica Tucker has been on a tear, batting .478 with two home runs and 13 RBI with seven stolen bases. She has seven doubles and scored 27 times this season.

Grayce Marcum, a freshman, is batting .463 while Bella Velez is hitting .451 with a team-best 18 RBI.

Rylee Phillips is dangerous when she gets on base, swiping 15 bags already this season.

Erica McMann and Velez take turns in the circle with McMann leading the team with 46.2 innings pitched and recording five wins. Velez leads the team with 20 strikeouts and has one win and one save.

Greenville faces Rose-Hulman on Wednesday before their conference-opening series against Spalding on Saturday. The Panthers have the league's best pitching staff so far with a team E.R.A. of 4.94. They are hitting .286 as a team and average 4.9 runs per game this season with a league-high six home runs.

Madi Case is hitting .500 this season with four doubles in her 20 hits.

Sydnee Plesko is batting .348 and has scored seven times.

Mia Boyd leads the team with 15 RBI and is batting .333 with six doubles while Desirae Yost (.316 average) and Morgan Wendling (.288 average) are tied for the team lead with 11 runs scored and both have reached double digits in runs batted in.

Alison Klaus and Melissa Bernal account for the majority of the innings in the circle. Klaus has thrown 45.2 innings and leads the SLIAC with 34 strikeouts while Bernal carries a league-best 2.21 earned-run average over her 38 innings thrown.

Spalding is up 13-12 in the all-time series against Greenville, having won the last two meetings; which have both come in the conference tournament.
