Softball drops doubleheader to Spalding

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Spalding on Saturday in Greenville. The Panthers dropped game one 4-1 and followed that with a 6-3 loss in game two.

A three-run homer by Spalding's Bella Velez gave the Golden Eagles all the runs they needed in the first inning of game one, and the Panthers were unable to recover.

Greenville gave up another run in the fifth inning and scored a run of their own in the sixth with an RBI double from Mia Boyd.

Melissa Bernal pitched the complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits.

In game two, the Panthers established a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, gaining a sacrifice fly from Emma Funk and an RBI double by Katie Woodruff.

Spalding took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, but GU's Jaclyn Belzer reached base on a infield single that drove in Desirae Yost.

In the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles scored three of starting pitcher Alison Klaus to gain enough cushion for the win.

Klaus piled up 11 strikeouts in the game, allowing six runs on eight hits.

Belzer went 4-for-4 for GU in game two, and Madi Case provided two hits.

The Panthers (6-14, 0-2 SLIAC) travel to Eureka for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
