Softball records split in doubleheader at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The softball team continued their SLIAC season with a doubleheader split at Eureka on Thursday. Greenville finished game one with a 12-2 six-inning win and followed that with a 12-6 loss in game two.

In game one, starting pitcher Melissa Bernal handcuffed Eureka over five innings, holding the Red Devils to two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Taylor Weiss pitched a perfect inning to finish the game.

Desirae Yost went 4-for-4 in game one with a double, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Emma Deters, Morgan Wendling, and Mia Boyd all collected two hits. One of Deters hits was a two-run homer in the first inning.

Jaclyn Belzer also knocked a home run, a three-run shot, in the first inning.

The Panthers built 4-1 and 6-4 leads in game two before Eureka rallied to win 12-6.

Madi Case, Boyd, and Belzer all had two hits in the second game. Yost also posted a two-run homer.

Alison Klaus worked in the circle and reached the fourth inning. She permitted five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Chesleigh Pugh finished the fourth inning for Klaus and pitched into the fifth inning, allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits and two walks.

Bernal concluded the game with 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

The Panthers (7-15, 1-3 SLIAC) go to Blackburn for a doubleheader on Saturday.
