Softball saddles first place Fontbonne with a SLIAC loss

GREENVILLE, Ill. - A disappointing ending to game one set the stage for a game two revival, and the softball team split against Fontbonne on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers lost game one 11-9 after allowing seven runs in the top of the seventh and final inning, and Alison Klaus pitched a complete game, three-hit, 11 strikeout effort to lead GU to a game two win.

The Panthers entered the top of the seventh inning of game one only needing three outs to pull closer to a tie for first place in the SLIAC east division, but Fontbonne rallied for seven runs to take the win.

Greenville jumped ahead 7-0 in the contest themselves with a first inning outburst. However, they only scored twice more over the remainder of the game.

Morgan Wendling went 3-for-4 for Greenville with two runs scored, and Jaclyn Belzer was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI.

Melissa Bernal pitched six innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, to the first place Griffins, and Fontbonnne reached Chesleigh Pugh for four runs, three earned, to take the win.

In game two, Klaus set the tone, and the Panthers rolled to a 4-1 win.

GU scored a first inning run on Mia Boyd's RBI single. Then, in the third inning, Greenville added three runs when Wendling scored, and Taylor Weiss added a two-run double.

Klaus only faced four batters above the minimum in the 84 minute contest.

The Panthers (15-19, 9-7 SLIAC) host Eureka on Wednesday at Panther Field.
