Softball sweeps Eureka at home

 

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team managed to secure a position as a top-four seed in the SLIAC tournament with a pair of wins against Eureka on Wednesday.

In game one, Greenville received a shutout pitching effort from Melissa Bernal who held the Red Devils to five hits and five walks in collecting her third shutout of the season.

GU benefited from a 3-for-3 effort from Mia Boyd in game one.

Boyd, Jaclyn Belzer, and Emma Funk knocked in Greenville's runs.

Taylor Weiss finished as the star of the game in game two after Greenville had relinquished a two-run seventh inning lead. With a runner on base, Weiss hammered a pitch over the left field fence to give the Panthers a 6-4 win.

Alison Klaus recorded the complete game win for Greenville, holding Eureka to four runs on 10 hits. She struck out eight batters.

The Panthers slipped behind 2-0 after the first inning, but rallied for one run in the third and three in the fourth to take the lead.

Desirae Yost collected two RBI with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.

Morgan Wendling also walked with the bases loaded, and a defensive miscue by Eureka helped Greenville score another run.

The Panthers (17-19, 11-7 SLIAC) host Blackburn on Saturday in a doubleheader at noon at Panther Field.
