Softball dominates on day two in Florida

NAPLES, Fla. - The softball team won both games on day two of their spring break trip to Florida. GU dominated Saint Joseph (Conn.) and Crown (Minn.), short-gaming both teams. The Panthers took game one 16-1 in five innings and won game two 16-8 in six innings.

Against Saint Joseph, Greenville ended the first inning tied 1-1 but blew it open in the second inning with six runs. They tacked on nine more runs later in the game to record the win. 

The Panthers were led at the plate by Josie Grunloh with a 3-for-3 appearance, two runs, four RBIs, and two stolen bases.

Madi Case wasn't too far behind, going 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs, and a stolen base. 

Valerie Greenley threw all five innings for GU, only throwing 43 pitches and earning her second win on the season.

GU battled against Crown in game two. Going into the fifth inning, the Panthers were trailing 7-4. GU took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs. They held Crown to only one run in the bottom of the fifth and then added five insurance runs in the sixth inning to short-game the Polars.

Case showed up again in game two. She went 4-for-5 with three runs, five RBIs, and another stolen base. Case hit two doubles and a triple.

Destiny Dunlap started in the circle for GU, pitching 1.1 innings and facing twelve batters.

Melissa Bernal came in during the second inning to throw for 2.2 innings. Bernal faced fifteen batters and struck out three.

Sarah Salas ended the game on the rubber for the Panthers, throwing for 2.0 innings. Salas didn't allow any hits and had three strikeouts. Bernal was awarded with the win and Salas with the save. 

After eight straight wins, the Panthers have collected an impressive 87 runs and 95 hits, ranking them first in the SLIAC. 

Greenville (8-0) faces Coe and Wis.-Superior tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. CST.
