Softball jumps to second in the SLIAC after Webster sweep

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The softball team jumped to second place in the conference with their sweep against Webster on Wednesday afternoon. Both games were nail-biters as the Panthers came away with a 1-0 win in game one and a 5-1 victory in game two.

The first game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Greenville collected a few hits to score their only run. Madi Case reached on an error and then advanced to second on Natalee Moore's single. Sarah Salas then ripped one to left field, scoring Case and giving GU the lead. The Panthers held the Gorloks to no runs in the remaining innings.

Salas led the team at the plate with her RBI and 2-for-3 performance. Moore was right there with her, also going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Sydnee Garrett threw a complete game for GU, shutting out the Gorloks and earning her thirteenth win of the season.

In game two, the Panthers scored in the third inning after Josie Grunloh tripled to right field and was knocked in by a sac fly from Moore. In the bottom of the inning, Webster tied it up. However, GU was able to score four runs in the fifth to gain the 5-1 lead.

Garrett and Moore led the team offensively in game two. Garrett had three RBIs after hitting a three-run homer in the top of the fifth, and Moore had two RBIs after her sac fly in the third and an RBI single in the fifth.

Starting for Greenville, Salas threw five strikeouts and only allowed the one run. Melissa Bernal took over in the fifth inning to complete the game. Bernal didn't give up any hits and struck out three batters. Salas was awarded the win.

The Panthers (29-7, 10-4 SLIAC) host Eureka on Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. for their last regular season games.
