Women's basketball fights back but falls 73-68 to Westminster

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team returned to their H.J. Long Gymnasium home floor on Thursday night for a game against Westminster, falling 73-68 to the Blue Jays.

Westminster outscored Greenville 17-12 in the opening quarter and added a 26-20 advantage in the second frame to lead GU 43-32 at the half.

In the second half, the Panthers reduced the deficit to 53-46 after three quarters and settled with the five point loss, despite fighting all the way back to a one possession game and three point deficit in the final minute.

Greenville reduced the Blue Jays lead from 11 points with just over a minute to go all the way to a single-possession game when Emily Reinneck knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Reinneck's three with eight seconds to go made the score 71-68, but the Blue Jays went to the free throw line and converted both shots to put the game out of reach.

Reinneck finished with 29 points and eight rebounds in the game. Both Madelyn Stephen and Haven Robertson each tallied 11 points.

Sway Denton had a team-high four assists in just 12 minutes of action, and Ally Cantrill produced five steals.

The Panthers (7-5, 1-1 SLIAC) return home for a game on Saturday, Jan. 22, against Blackburn at 3 p.m.
