Women's basketball wins on Anderson's layup at buzzer against Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team avenged an earlier loss with their 80-78 win at Blackburn on Saturday.

Greenville tied the game with eight seconds to go and Blackburn missed a chance to win the game on their ensuing possession. GU collected the defensive rebound and quickly called a timeout. After a timeout, Greenville advanced the ball past midcoast and Madelyn Stephen got the inbound pass to Ashley Anderson coming off a screen for a layup and win as time expired.

Emily Reinneck had an outstanding game with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists, leading the squad in all three categories.

Stephen added 19 points, and Anderson just fell short of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Panthers led 13-9 after the first quarter and 34-31 at halftime.

Greenville was up 61-54 after three quarters before Blackburn tightened the score with a 24-19 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Overall, the Panthers shot 42.3 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the arc.

Blackburn held the advantage at the free throw line, knocking down 21-of-24 attempts for a 87.5 percent clip while the Panthers were 12-of-22 for a 54.5 percent showing.

The Panthers (12-10, 6-6 SLIAC) host Eureka on Wednesday night in H.J. Long Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
