Women's basketball launches new season with 83-71 win over Monmouth

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team opened their season with a 83-71 win over Monmouth on Tuesday evening in H.J. Long Gymnasium. The Panthers were led by 19 points from Madelyn Stephen and 18 points from Emily Reinneck in the opening night win.

The Panthers opened the game with a 21-13 lead after the first quarter. Monmouth outscored Greenville 21-19 in the second quarter, but the Panthers still held a 40-34 lead at the half.

After an even 24-24 third quarter, the Panthers found themselves with a two point lead, 73-71, with 3:30 to play. However, Greenville scored the last 10 points of the game to pull away and post a 12-point win.

Maddy Meek and Carolina Hoffman each reached double figure efforts in scoring. Meek had 11 points, and Hoffman tallied 10 points.

The Panthers were led in rebounding by Alyssa Seymour with six rebounds. Stephen and Ally Cantrill each posted four assists. Reinneck added six steals.

The Panthers (1-0) travel to Covenant for two games over the weekend. They play Brevard on Friday and Covenant on Saturday.
