Women's basketball drops SLIAC tournament game against Fontbonne

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball season ended on Wednesday night in the first round of the SLIAC tournament when the Panthers suffered a 68-61 loss to Fontbonne.

The Panthers played from behind for nearly the entire game, but the women cut the lead to four points and had opportunities to reduce the deficit to one possession in the final three minutes.

With five minutes to play, GU trailed 59-49, but the Panthers completed a stretch with six straight points to make the score 59-55. The Panthers missed two shots in the paint with a little over two minutes to play, and the Griffins sank a three-pointer that put the game out of reach with 1:48 to go.

The Panthers trailed 13-8 after the first quarter and 35-26 at halftime. Fontbonne's lead stood at 54-42 after three quarters.

Panther guard Carolina Hoffman finished the game with 26 points to lead all scorers, and she also led all players in rebounds with a double-double effort that included 11 rebounds.

Savana Powell-Goodman added 13 points for GU, and Alyssa Seymour provided 10 points.

Hoffman and Powell-Goodman led GU's defensive effort with three steals each.

The Panthers concluded their season with a record of 16-10 and a third place SLIAC league finish.
