Women's soccer soars past Webster to secure appearance in SLIAC championship

FENTON, Mo. - The women's soccer team defeated Webster 3-1 on Thursday night and moved to the finals of the SLIAC tournament. On Saturday, the Panthers will host Westminster as they attempt to become the first GU women's soccer team to qualify for the NCAA Division III national championships.

The Panthers fell behind 1-0 in the sixth minute of the match, but that was the only goal that the Gorloks could send past Greenville goalkeeper Addison Miller who posted 13 saves in the effort.

Later in the first half, Jen De Leon De Leon posted the tying goal in the 33rd minute with an assist from Allyson Shultz.

Early in the second half, the Panthers tallied their winning and insurance goals.

In the 46th minute, De Leon scored for the second time as Ashlie Johnston Cabral provided the assist, and Nina Torvisco added a goal in the 48th minute to make things more comfortable after an assist from Emma Cadwell.

The Panthers posted 18 shots in the match, led by De Leon with seven.

Webster had 20 shots, including 14 on goal.  Miller set her personal GU career mark in saves, posting more than double her previous high of six saves which came at home against Westminster on Sept. 28.

The Panthers (12-6-2) will play the Blue Jays at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Greenville.  Gates will open at 2:30 p.m. for the final.
