Sara Yakana gives women's track and field an NCAA Division III All-American performance

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The women's indoor track and field team received an All-American long jump performance from Sara Yakana at the NCAA Division III national championships and placed 37th in the country in the overall team standings.

Yakana became an All-American with fourth place in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 5.74 meters during her first appearance at the D-III national meet.

She became Greenville sixth indoor qualifier in the long jump and fifth indoor long jump All-American. Greenville's previous All-Americans included JaMecia McCall and Penny Grant each two times.

Yakana gave GU a female indoor All-American for the second straight year, and she recorded Greenville's best NCAA individual national placement since Chelsea Gilles was a national runner-up in the 2017 400 meter dash.

Talahiva Talanoa also qualified and competed in the weight throw. She had a top attempt of 16.16 meters which ranked 16th.

Overall, Greenville finished with five points and placed 37th of the 66 teams recording points.

GU last placed as high as 37th with 27th place in 2017.

The Panthers will open their outdoor season on March 23 at Washington-St. Louis.
