Baseball lifted by Fleener in doubleheader split against Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The baseball team received a dominating effort from Luke Fleener on the mound in game one's 7-1 win and later split the doubleheader with a 10-1 loss in game two against Fontbonne on Saturday afternoon.

Fleener held the Griffins to only one run on five hits with five strikeouts over eight innings, and Jacob Hammer wrapped up the win with a scoreless inning in the first contest.

The Panthers received a two-run single from Snyder Pennington in the third inning and an RBI single from George Schneider in the fifth inning to build a 3-0 lead.

After Fontbonne reached Fleener for run in the eighth inning, Landon Mokris crushed a three-run home run in the top of the ninth, and Zack McClease later delivered an RBI double.

Pennington finished game one with a 4-for-5 performance with a run scored and two RBI.

Markus Isaiah posted a 3-for-4 game from the ninth position in the batting order with two runs scored, and Schneider and Jacob Sutton both went 2-for-5 with a run.

Game two saw Fontbonne establish a 5-0 lead in the third inning before the Panthers could muster a run in the top of the fourth on Trent Morgenstern's RBI single to make the score 5-1.

The Griffins added four runs in the fourth inning and one in the eighth.

Cade Buehnerkemper had a rough outing on the mound with five runs allowed over 2.2 innings.

Ian Wilson gave up four in one inning before Braden Maltbie finished the game with only unearned run over 4.1 innings of relief.

The Panthers (7-18, 1-5 SLIAC) will compete at Wabash on Thursday at 2 p.m.
