Baseball drops doubleheader against MUW

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The baseball team played MUW in a SLIAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon afternoon and fell 7-4 in the first game before dropping the second game 5-4 in extra innings. The USA Stadium complex hosted the doubleheader originally slated for MUW's home field.

In game one, the Owls mustered three runs, two earned, against starting pitcher Stephen Hardwick who received the loss. Hardwick permitted five hits.

Luke Fleener entered the game in the second inning and finished the contest. Fleener hurled 6.1 innings, limiting MUW to four runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks. He struck out seven.

After falling behind 3-1 in the second inning, the Panthers never again held the lead.

The middle of GU's batting order boasted two hitter with three hits - cleanup batter Snyder Pennington at 3-for-5 and number five hitter Brexton Beard who went 3-for-3.

Rhett Pennington drove in two runners on a hit and a sacrifice fly.

In game two, Cade Buehnerkemper drew the starting nod and fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. He departed the game in the second inning after working 1.2 innings and yielded the mound to Braden Maltbie who posted a very effective relief outing of eight innings.

Maltbie only surrendered two hits, three walks, and two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts, and worked into the 10th inning when MUW pushed across the winning run.

The Panthers tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth with an RBI triple from Jacob Sutton and RBI singles by Landon Mokris and Beard.

MUW scored in the sixth to go up 4-3, but the Panthers answered in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from Dylan Hill that pushed the game to extra innings.

Markus Isaiah and Mokris both finished game two at 3-for-5. Sutton and Hill posted two hits.

The Panthers (11-20, 5-7 SLIAC) will remain in Tennessee for a non-conference game against MUW on Saturday.
