GREENVILLE, Ill. - The football team picked up their second shutout of the season when they defeated Iowa Wesleyan 21-0 at Francis Field. The blanking marked the first time since 1993 that the Panther football team has shut out two opponents in the same season.

The defensive efforts of both teams stole the show as the teams combined for just 287 yards of total offense. The Panthers had 243 of the yards and held Iowa Wesleyan to just 44 yards of total offense.

Since 2002, the Panthers have held three opponents under 100 yards in a game, and all three were shutouts. Greenville limited Westminster to 98 yards on Oct. 5 of this season and only permitted 75 yards of total offense against Principia on Sept. 27, 2008. Today's total of 44 yards set a new benchmark.

Greenville held a 7-0 lead at halftime, scoring in the first quarter with 1:15 remaining when Paul Garrett ran the ball in from one yard out and Rafael Soares de Castro made the PAT.

In the third quarter, kicker Soares de Castro split the uprights from 27 yards to give GU a 10-0 lead. Soares de Castro put three more points on the scoreboard with 14:12 remaining in the game.

Late in the fourth quarter, Christian Moss ran for a four-yard touchdown and the Panthers converted a two-point conversion pass to Blake Wagner.

Garrett ended the game with 90 yards on 19 carries as he surpassed the 1000 yard milestone in his first season.

Moss went 30 yards on 10 attempts.

George Harris was 5-of-11 for 115 yards, and a long pass of 43 yards went to Eric Kranh.

Kranh caught two passes for 77 yards.

Lakari Benjamin led Greenville's defense with 12 tackles.

Overall, Greenville had six quarterback sacks and stopped 18 plays before IWU reached the line of scrimmage.

Greenville forced three fumbles, and Javiera Bovell recovered two of them.

The Panthers (7-2, 6-1 UMAC) will conclude their regular season with a contest against Minnesota-Morris at Noon on Saturday, Nov. 16. Senior day activities will begin at 11:40 a.m.
