Softball nips MUW by identical 3-2 scores in doubleheader sweep

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team had an exciting doubleheader sweep against MUW on Saturday afternoon. In both games, the Panthers fought from behind to win 3-2. 

In game one, Greenville was trailing 2-0, but they cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning. It was a 2-1 ball game until the bottom of the seventh when the Panthers started to string together some hits. Valerie Greenley started the inning with a single to right center, and Sarah Salas followed it with a triple to right center, hitting in the tying run. With a runner on third base, Jamey Johnson singled to center field, knocking in Myrisa DeLoriea and giving GU the 3-2 walk-off win. 

Johnson and Salas both went 1-for-3 in game one with one RBI.

Sydnee Garrett was in the circle again for the Panthers and collected another win. She threw a complete game and had an impressive eight strikeouts. 

In the second game, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Owls tied it up in the second inning and took the lead in the top of the third. However, GU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up 2-2 and then collected the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. 

After Salas moved to third on a sac bunt from Jayden Zamora, Johnson was credited again for hitting in the winning run. She smacked one to right field, scoring Salas. 

Emma Williams led the team offensively with a 2-for-4 game with a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases. 

Greenley started on the rubber for the Panthers in game two, pitching 5.1 innings and striking out two batters. Melissa Bernal relieved her in the sixth inning and didn't allow a single hit. Bernal was given the win. 

The Panthers (19-5, 2-2 SLIAC) have another conference doubleheader on Monday against the Westminster Blue Jays at 4:00 and 6:00 pm.
