Softball splits doubleheader against Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The softball team split their doubleheader against Lyon with a 5-0 win in the first game and a 7-6 loss in the second. 

The Panthers steadily added runs to the board throughout game one. They took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and didn't let up. GU tacked on another run in the second, two more in the fifth, and a final run in the seventh inning. 

Natalee Moore hit in three of the five runs in the first game. Moore went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Sarah Salas and Jamey Johnson accounted for the other two RBIs.

Emma Williams also showed out at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance, one run, and one stolen base. 

In game one, Sydnee Garrett dominated in the circle for the Panthers. Garrett shut out the Scots, throwing nine strikeouts and only allowing a single hit.

Game two didn't quite go the Panthers' way. GU started strong with a 2-0 lead after the first inning and kept a lead until the bottom of the fifth. However, Lyon scored five runs in the fifth inning to make it 7-4. Greenville fought back in the next inning and scored two runs but couldn't regain the lead in the seventh inning. 

Destiny Dunlap led the Panthers in the box, going 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a run. Dunlap singled in the second inning to score Johnson and then knocked one over the fence in the top of the sixth to score two. 

Salas started on the rubber for game two. She struck out seven batters and only allowed two earned runs. Melissa Bernal came in for relief in the fifth inning but only threw to four batters before Garrett took over. Garrett finished out the game for GU. Salas received her first loss of the season. 

The Panthers (24-6, 5-3 SLIAC) face Fontbonne away on Wednesday at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
