Softball defeats Blackburn twice in two-day series

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team hosted Blackburn on Friday afternoon despite the rain. The Panthers pulled off an exciting 10-9 extra-inning, walk-off win in the first game before postponing the second game to Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday, Greenville defeated the Beavers with a 6-2 win.

In game one, the Panthers fought back from a 6-0 deficit to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh with a home run from Valerie Greenley. Blackburn scored three runs in the top of the eighth, but Greenville triumphed with a few crucial hits in the bottom of the eighth. Madi Case had an RBI single, Natalee Moore hit a sac fly to score another run, and then Sydnee Garrett launched one over the scoreboard in left field to finish the game.

Moore led the team offensively in game one with a 2-for-3 performance with one home run and three RBIs. Garrett and Greenley weren't too far behind with two RBIs each.

Garrett started in the circle for the Panthers but was relieved by Melissa Bernal in the third inning. Bernal finished out the game and slowed Blackburn's scoring. She struck out three batters and was credited with the win.

In the second game, the Panthers gained a lead in the second inning and never gave it up. Greenville strung together six hits and a walk in the bottom of the second to score their six runs. Blackburn added runs on the board in the third and sixth innings to make it 6-2, but GU held them there and came away with another conference win.

Case crushed it at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Greenley also had another two RBIs in the second game.

On the rubber for GU, Greenley threw a complete game, only giving up two hits and one earned run. She earned her sixth win of the season.

The Panthers (27-7, 8-4 SLIAC) face Webster tomorrow at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
