Women's soccer outshoots Monmouth, falls 4-1

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's soccer team faced a winning non-conference opponent Monmouth on Saturday night in Greenville and lost by a 4-1 margin.

Despite the final score, Greenville outshot Monmouth 16-9. The Panthers had seven shots in the first half and nine shots in the second half. Five of Greenville's shots were on goal.

Jen De Leon De Leon paced GU's offensive attack with five shots, including one on goal.

Monmouth posted a goal in the fifth minute of the match and carried the 1-0 lead to halftime.

In the second half, Monmouth drew a foul in the penalty area in the 47th minute and capitalized on the opportunity to take the 2-0 lead after a penalty kick.

The Scots added their third and fourth goals in the 73rd and 74th minutes.

Jordan Wilson provided Greenville's only goal in the 83rd minute of the match when a cross from De Leon De Leon just missed the foot of an on-rushing GU attacker and was collected by Wilson in the corner. Wilson got around a Monmouth defender and lifted a shot over the goalkeeper and into the opposite side of the net to cut Greenville's deficit to three.

Wilson's goals have come in consecutive matches.

The Panthers (2-5-1) continue their season with their final non-conference match when they travel to Illinois College for a contest on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
