Baseball sweeps doubleheader at Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The baseball team won both halves of a doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan in their opening SLIAC action of the season.  Greenville won game one 7-3 before capping the sweep with a 9-5 win.

After three scoreless innings to start game one, the Panthers got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fourth.  Andrew Torbeck continued his solid performance with runners on base by hitting a two-run double, and Tucker Rappe provided a sacrifice fly.

Rappe added an RBI single in the top of the fifth for a 4-0 advantage.

Iowa Wesleyan pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Greenville answered immediately when an error led to two runs and Adam Lamb had an RBI single.

Logan Murphy pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out 11 in the complete game effort.

Klaiton Wolff ended with three hits in the game.

The Panthers needed a comeback effort in game two to erase a 3-0 lead.

Greenville made the game 3-2 when an error by the left fielder resulted in two runs.

GU took the lead in the top of the seventh with four runs.  In Greenville's four-run seventh, Torbeck provided an RBI single, Matthew Schroeder bunted in a run, they scored on an errot by the centerfielder, and Devin Gumb hit an RBI double.

In the ninth inning, Gumb crossed home plate on a passed ball.

Lukas Whitten stated the game on the mound and went three innings, giving up three runs.  Austin Rexroad, who earned the win in the contest, pitched three scoreless innings of relief.

Cole Becker threw one scoreless inning, and Wolff collected the save with two innings to finish the game.

Wolff and Gumb each posted three hits for GU.

The Panthers (10-7, 2-0 SLIAC) host Blackburn on Friday at Robert E. Smith Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
