Baseball defeated by Oglethorpe in opener

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. - The baseball team opened their season on Friday afternoon with an 8-3 loss at Oglethorpe. The Panthers fell behind 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Oglethorpe was the beneficiary of five unearned runs, and Greenville could not make up the deficit.

In the top of the third inning, Greenville scored their first run of the season when Sam Hodges grounded out to the pitcher, and Austin Lawrence crossed the plate safely.

The Panthers permitted Oglethorpe to take a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Greenville got the run back in the top of the fifth when Lawrence scored a run on a dropped fly ball hit by Ty Maxie.

Oglethorpe tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh, and Klaiton Wolff scored on a wild pitch for Greenville in the top of the ninth.

Logan Murphy drew the opening day start on the mound for Greenville and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and three walks. He struck out two.

Lukas Whitten relieved Murphy, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks while fanning three.

Wolff had a 2-for-5 afternoon at the plate, and Andrew Torbeck went 2-for-3 at the dish.

The Panthers (0-1) go to Berry on Saturday afternoon to play Rhodes and Berry in a pair of nine-inning contests.
