Baseball posts loss and tie on Saturday

O'FALLON, Ill. - The baseball team was defeated 3-1 by Nebraska Wesleyan in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader before the teams tied 3-3 after 11 innings due to darkness in the second game.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one when Drew Frey had an infield RBI single that scored Klaiton Wolff.

The GU defense was challenged in the sixth inning when NWU scored three unearned runs, courtesy of three GU errors.

Wolff drew the start on the mound and pitched six innings, only allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Wolff and Frey each had two hits for GU.

Game two ended in a 3-3 tie, but it was the Greenville comeback efforts that stood out.

After NWU scored a run in the first and second innings, Greenville evened the game in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single by Clarence Falls and an RBI double by Blake Duncan.

Nebraska Wesleyan got the run right back in the top of the fifth, and Greenville tied it in the bottom of the seventh when Ty Maxie stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and had an RBI fielder's choice.

Despite opportunities to win the game in extra innings, neither team scored in the extra frames.

Frey had his third and fourth hits of the day and stole three bases.

Sam Alendar pitched six innings, only permitting two of three runs to be earned.

The Panthers (0-5-1) host WashU on Wednesday.
