Baseball topped by Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan

O'FALLON, Ill. - The baseball team dropped a pair of games at Family Sports Park on Saturday, dropping a 5-3 game to Wheaton followed by an 8-4 loss to Illinois Wesleyan.

Wheaton took the early lead against the Panthers with two runs in the top of the first. In the third inning, Wheaton added another run, and they scored two runs in the fourth inning.

Greenville began their comeback in the seventh inning with one run when Joe Wood hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Sam Hodges to score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Grant Carman provided an RBI groundout, and Klaiton Wolff reached on an error to allow Drew Frey to score a run.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers brought the tying run to the plate after Parker Panich singled, but Wheaton retired GU for the win.

Sam Alender received the start on the mound and went six innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts. His record dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Lukas Whitten provided three scoreless innings on the mound.

Hodges recorded three hits in four at bats

In game two, Greenville gave up five runs over the third, fourth, and fifth innings, and Illinois Wesleyan added three in the top of the eighth to take an 8-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Panthers scored three runs, and they added a run in the ninth.

In the eighth inning, Carman reached on a single and stole second and third bases. After a walk to Frey, Wolff delivered an RBI single, and Hodges followed with a two run double.

In the ninth inning, the Panthers first two batters reached base safely and a balk pushed the runners to second and third before Carman's RBI groundout scored Ty Maxie who had reached on an error.

Wolff started on the mound, went five innings, and allowed five runs, three earned on five hits. He received the loss.

Logan Murphy relieved Wolff with 2.1 innings, permitting three runs, two earned.

Jaxen Gibson ended the game with 1.2 scoreless innings.

Hodges had two of Greenville's six hits in four at bats and delivered two RBI.

The Panthers (0-7-1) continue their season against WPI in Central Florida during Spring Break.
