LEESBURG, Fla. - The baseball team continued their spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep over Suffolk on Thursday. The Panthers won game one 10-8 and took a 7-3 victory in game two.
The Panthers put a run on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one when Klaiton Wolff homered to left field.
In the top of the second, Joe Wood reached on a leadoff double and went to third on a passed ball when Clarence Falls attempted to bunt. Falls capitalized on the new opportunity with a runner on third and sent Wood home on an RBI single.
With nobody out in the second, Mark Islas placed a sacrifice bunt attempt in a perfect position that was just out of the reach of the pitcher to the right of the mound and resulted in a single. Torbeck advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, and Ryan Taylor walked to load the bases for Drew Frey.
Frey promptly delivered a two-run double to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.
GU went on top 5-0 with Ty Maxie's RBI groundout, and Wolff made it a 6-0 lead with an RBI single before the inning concluded.
In the top of the fourth, Greenville added to their lead with RBI singles from Wolff and Wood.
Suffolk tightened the score to 8-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth, but Wood posted a two-run double to give GU a 10-3 lead.
The Panthers held on despite allowing four runs in the bottom of the sixth and a solo home run by the Rams in the bottom of the seventh.
Logan Murphy gained the pitching win for Greenville to improve to 1-1. He worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on six hits and four walks. He hit four batters with a pitch and struck out two.
Jaxon Gibson closed the game with 1 2/3 innings, permitting one run on two hits and two walks. He had two strikeouts.
In game two, Greenville fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but they took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and scored twice in the third and fourth innings.
Wood scored GU's first run of game two after he walked, advanced to second on an error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt, and was knocked in by Grant Carman's base hit.
After Carman advanced to third on a hit by Blake Duncan and a double steal, Andrew Torbeck delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Carman. Duncan eventually scored on an error by the second baseman.
Suffolk added a run in the top of the third, but Greenville added two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Frey singled to lead off the third inning and went to second on a wild pitch. He stole third, and Wolff hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Later, Ty Maxie scored after previously reaching on a walk when Sam Hodges singled and the right fielder committed an error trying to throw Maxie out at third base.
In the fourth inning, Ryan Taylor delivered an RBI single that plated Torbeck, and Taylor later scored on an error.
Suffolk managed to scratch across an additional run in the top of the sixth, but it was not enough to overcome Lukas Whitten's 100-pitch, seven inning complete game win. Whitten only allowed seven base runners on four hits and three walks while striking out six.
The Panthers (4-8-1) will play Loras on Friday as their trip to Florida concludes.
