Baseball topped by DePauw in twinbill

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of DePauw on Saturday at Robert E. Smith Field. The Panthers fell 6-3 in the first game before dropping the second contest 8-7.

The Panthers opened game one by taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning on River Baker's two run single with runners on second and third and nobody out.

DePauw knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the third, but Parker Panich delivered a run-scoring single to allow the Panthers to regain the lead in Greenville's time at bat in the bottom of the third.

The Tigers tied the score with a run in the top of the fifth and took the lead with a tally in the top of the sixth.

DePauw added insurance runs with solo home runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Drew Frey helped the Panthers with a 2-for-4 hitting performance.

Luke Fleener pitched five and two-thirds of an inning, striking out seven and allowing four runs. He was saddled with the loss.

Chad Plath threw two innings, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts, and Parker Lutz hurled one and one-third of an inning while allowing a home run and striking out three.

Game two was disappointing for the Panthers as a four-run rally by DePauw in the eighth inning game them an 8-7 win.

DePauw was the first team on the scoreboard with single runs in the second and third innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Landon Mokris mashed a pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run, and the Panthers recorded six runs in the fifth for a 7-2 lead.

In Greenville's six-run fifth inning, Dustin Sutton delivered an RBI single, and Mokris had an RBI double to give Greenville a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Panich knocked an RBI single, Aaron Klar produced a two-run single, and George Schneider had an RBI base hit.

The Tigers added runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 7-4 before their four-run eighth.

Mokris ended with a 3-for-5 hitting performance with two runs scored and two RBI.

Frey went 2-for-5, and Panich was 2-for-4.

Ian Wilson started on the mound for the Panthers and threw two and two-thirds of an inning before being knocked out of the game after a comebacker that went off his leg. He allowed two runs, one earned on three hits.

Lucas Teel relieved Wilson with four and one-third innings, permitting two runs on three hits.

Hunter Cullum was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in two innings.

The Panthers (0-6) continue their season on Friday, March 12 at Covenant in Georgia.
