Baseball drops games to Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The baseball team completed their trip to Georgia with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Covenant on Saturday. The Panthers lost game one 9-2, followed by a 17-7 defeat in game two.

Greenville received an RBI single from Dustin Sutton in the first inning of game one, but that was their only lead of the day.

In the bottom of the first, Covenant regained the lead with a two run inning and scored twice in the third inning, once in the fourth, and twice in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Luke Fleener pitched 4.1 innings for GU and allowed seven runs, three earned, on seven hits.

Landon Mokris went 2-for-3 for the Panthers in game one.

In the second game, the Panthers allowed a run in the bottom of the first, but Covenant exploded for a 13-run third inning to take a 14-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Greenville cut their deficit in half with a seven run inning.

GU scored in the fourth inning on George Schneider's RBI infield single and an RBI walk by Caleb Norton.

Drew Frey stepped to the plate and produced an RBI single, and Greenville later received two-run singles from Aaron Klar and Mokris.

Lucas Teel drew the start on the mound and only allowed one earned run in 2.1 innings, but he gave up nine runs on eight hits and three walks.

Chad Plath pitched three innings of relief, only permitting two unearned runs.

Schneider went 2-for-3, and Mark Islas joined him with a 2-for-4 performance.

The Panthers (0-9) host Iowa Wesleyan on Friday in their first conference matchup of the season. The Saturday doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
