Baseball sweeps Iowa Wesleyan in SLIAC doubleheader

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team defeated Iowa Wesleyan in two games on Friday to earn their first victories of the young season.

In game one, the Panthers received a 3-for-3 hitting performance from Mark Islas in taking an 8-5 win.

Greenville recorded single runs in the first and second inning to establish the lead.

After IWU cut the lead to one, the Panthers tacked on two runs in the third and one run in the fourth to push the lead to 5-1

Iowa Wesleyan made the score 5-4 in the top of the sixth, and the Panthers answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh.

Jaxen Gibson earned his first win of the season with six innings pitched, and Hunter Cullum only allowed one unearned run in three innings for the save.

In game two, Greenville broke up a 0-0 deadlock with a run on an error in the bottom of the fifth, and Landon Mokris and Dustin Sutton delivered RBI singles in the seventh to give GU a 3-0 win.

Lucas Teel pitched seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits and two walks, as he took the win. Chad Plath finished the game with a pair of hitless innings for the save.

The Panthers (2-9, 2-0 SLIAC) will face Iowa Wesleyan in day two of their four-game set on Saturday in Greenville.
