Baseball drops DH at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The baseball team opened their weekend in Louisville with a doubleheader sweep by Spalding. Greenville lost the first game 9-3 and fell in game two 11-2.

The Panthers fell behind 1-0 after the second inning and 3-0 after four.

In the top of the fifth, Drew Frey provided an RBI single to make the score 3-1, but Spalding added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to establish a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, River Baker singled to left-center, driving in two runs and making it a 5-3 game.

However, Spalding added four runs in the bottom of the eighth for insurance.

Frey went 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot, and Dustin Sutton, GU's number five hitter, was 2-for-4. Baker also went 2-for-4 in the eight hole.

Jaxen Gibson pitched six and two-thirds innings in the game, allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits.

In game two, Spalding outslugged the Panthers in their 11-2 win.

Greenville was held to just two hits.

Spalding carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning when they exploded for five runs.

Greenville added their runs in the top of the seventh before Spalding plated five in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the eighth.

Frey and Sutton each went 1-for-3 and scored for GU.

Lucas Teel started on the mound and gave up three runs, two earned, in five and one-third innings. He fanned four Golden Eagles.

The Panthers (3-12, 3-3 SLIAC) continue their trip on Saturday with another doubleheader against Spalding.
