GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team competed well against No. 4 Webster on Saturday night, but GU lost 6-4 in a seven inning game one before falling 6-5 in game two.
Greenville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one when George Schneider's RBI single to left center field was misplayed by the center fielder and led to a second GU run.
The Panthers remained on top until the fifth inning when Webster posted five runs to take the lead.
The Panthers cut the deficit to 5-4 when they added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Landon Mokris delivered a sacrifice fly, and Mark Islas had an RBI single to account for GU's runs.
Webster tacked on an insurance tally in the top of the seventh inning.
Luke Fleener started on the mound and pitched into the fifth inning, but he ended with four runs allowed in four innings. Chad Plath permitted one run in the fifth inning, and Hunter Cullum gave up a run while pitching in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Panthers played catchup in game two and ultimately took the loss after Webster scored three runs in the final two innings.
Webster took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning and extended their lead to 3-0 with a run in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Drew Frey walked with the bases loaded to put the Panthers on the scoreboard, and GU scored its second run on an RBI fielder's choice by Dustin Sutton.
The Panthers tied the score at 3-3 when Mokris singled to second base to deliver the Panthers third run.
In the top of the eighth, Webster scored a pair of runs and added an extra run in the top of the ninth for a 6-3 lead.
With their backs against the wall in the bottom of the ninth, Mokris provided a two-run double with one out to make it a one-run game, but Greenville's final two batters struck out looking to end the game.
Ian Wilson performed well on the mound, hurling six innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. Craig Oertel relieved with a scoreless inning, but Webster scored three off Seth Burnham in the eighth and ninth innings for the win.
The Panthers (4-21, 4-12 SLIAC) travel to Eureka for a four-game series on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24.
