Baseball splits against Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The baseball team split their doubleheader with Eureka on Friday afternoon. The Panthers allowed back-to-back-back home runs in the eighth inning to lose game one 5-3, but Greenville bounced back to win game two 10-5.

In game one, the Panthers carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth when Eureka hit a barrage of solo home runs to give the Red Devils the runs they needed for the win.

The Panthers took the lead in the second inning after Mark Islas launched the first home run of his GU career.

In the third inning, the Panthers received their second run on a balk with the bases loaded, and Logan Garrick later delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Greenville's third run.

Eureka scored once in the third inning and once in the seventh inning.

Landon Mokris went 2-for-4 for the Panthers in game one.

Jaxen Gibson hurled seven innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts, and Hunter Cullum permitted a solo homer in one inning on the mound.

In game two, Greenville's bats exploded for five runs in the third and three in the fourth as they built an 8-0 lead.

Eureka reduced the Panther lead to four with a four-run outburst in the seventh inning, but GU added two runs in the top of the eighth. Eureka scored for the final time with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Mokris finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Drew Frey and Dustin Sutton each scored a pair of runs, and Rhett Pennington supplied a two-run homer.

Lucas Teel worked six and two thirds innings as he collected the win. He gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Luke Rushik gave up a run in an inning, and Craig Oertel closed the game with one and one third scoreless innings.

The Panthers (5-22, 5-13 SLIAC) are scheduled to play Eureka in a doubleheader on Saturday on the road.
