Baseball splits another doubleheader with Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The baseball team defeated Eureka 13-11 in game one before falling 15-5 in seven innings of game two on the road on Saturday.

The Panthers and Red Devils combined for all 24 runs of the game in the first four innings before settling down over a scoreless final three innings.

Greenville opened the game one scoring with an RBI single from Landon Mokris and a three-run homer by Tanner Gerdes as they took a 4-0 first inning lead.

Eureka tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the second, but the Panthers recorded seven runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

Gerdes scored on a wild pitch for Greenville's first run of the third inning, and Drew Frey produced a two-run double.

Mokris and Mark Islas provided sacrifice flies in the third inning, Josh McGovern had an RBI single, and Gerdes added an RBI double.

Greenville allowed Eureka to shave five runs off the deficit in the bottom of the third inning, but the Panthers scored twice the fourth inning to go on top 13-9. Frey scored on a wild pitch, and McGovern walked with the bases loaded to drive in the final run.

Eureka added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Frey and Gerdes ended up 3-for-5 game one. Sutton went 2-for-4, and Mokris was 2-for-3.

Luke Fleener started on the mound and pitched three innings, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits.

Braden Maltbie permitted two runs, one earned on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning.

Craig Oertel, Seth Burnham, and Chad Plath worked the final three and two-thirds innings without giving up a run. Plath recored his second save.

In game two, the Panthers posted one run in every inning from the second inning through the sixth, but Eureka kept up and exploded with nine runs in the fifth inning to take the win.

GU received an RBI double from Parker Panich in the second inning and a sacrifice fly from Dustin Sutton in the third.

In the top of the fourth inning, Gerdes homered for the second straight game, and Frey delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Blake Duncan closed out GU's scoring with a home run in the sixth.

Frey went 2-for-4, and Duncan had a 2-for-3 afternoon.

Ian Wilson opened the game for Greenville on the mound and went four innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on 10 hits and two walks. He struck out four.

Luke Rushik permitted four runs in two-thirds of an inning, and Caleb Babb gave up three runs without recording an out. Brexton Beard gave up the two runs that finished the game on three hits and four walks.

The Panthers (6-23, 5-15 SLIAC) travel to Blackburn for a doubleheader on April 30.
