Baseball drops opening game of SLIAC tournament

O'FALLON, Mo. - The baseball team suffered an 8-2 loss to Westminster on Thursday in their first game of the SLIAC tournament.

Westminster took an early 5-0 lead with four runs in the opening inning and a single run in the second.

The Panthers received RBI hits from Mark Islas and George Schneider in the third and fourth innings to reduce the deficit to 5-2, but the Blue Jays tacked on three in the bottom of the fourth.

Islas wrapped up the game with three hits in five at bats.

Drew Frey and Landon Mokris each had two hits.

Greenville's starter Jaxen Gibson worked four innings, allow all eight Westminster runs. Gibson fell to 2-7 overall.

He was relieved by Seth Burnham who hurled four scoreless innings.

The Panthers (9-29) will play Eureka in an elimination game on Friday at 10 a.m. at Clayton High School.
