Baseball concludes season with victory over Eureka, loss to Westminster in SLIAC tournament

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The baseball team concluded their 2021 spring season by fending off Eureka 7-6 in their first elimination game before being dealt a 3-2 defeat by Westminster in the SLIAC tournament on Saturday

In the first game against Eureka, the Panthers jumped on the Red Devils with a four run opening frame. In GU's first inning, Greenville received four straight RBI hits to establish the early lead. Landon Mokris and Tanner Gerdes supplied RBI singles in the first inning, and Logan Garrick and Dustin Sutton had RBI doubles.

Eureka tied the score in the top of the second, but Greenville added single runs in the bottom of the second and third.

In the second inning, Garrick supplied his second RBI hit of the game, singling to centerfield.

George Schneider homered in the bottom of the third.

Eureka tied the score for the second time with two runs in the top of the seventh, and Greenville scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth when pinch hitter Thomas Dowell put the ball in play with a groundout to first base that allowed Schneider to score.

Lucas Teel worked six innings in the game, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits. Craig Oertel provided a scoreless seventh inning, and Hunter Cullum was unscored upon in two innings.

In their second elimination game, Greenville again played Westminster in a one-run game, the third between the teams this season, and the Panthers fell 3-2

Greenville scored their only two runs in the top of the first. Garrick provided an RBI single, and Gerdes reached on an RBI fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the first, the Blue Jays scored a run, and they added two runs in the seventh off Luke Fleener.

Fleener worked into the eighth inning, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Chad Plath relieved Fleener and had a perfect two-thirds of an inning.

Aaron Klar went 2-for-3 in the game.

The Panthers finished their season with a record of 10-30.
