Spirit program competes at NCA national championships in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Greenville University Panther cheer and dance, Hoguey, drumline, and color guard competed at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) national championships over the Easter weekend.

This year also marked the 75th anniversary of NCA.

The spirit squads competed in the open game-day division and faced off with teams from Navarro College, Muskingum University, the University of New England-Biddeford, Lake Land College, North Carolina Wesleyan University, and East Texas Baptist University.

The teams were judged by three panel judges and one deductions judge. The panel judges score in the areas of execution, skill incorporation, and visual appeal of band chant and fight song as well as effective use of game-day props, and overall impression.

The teams competed on Thursday and Friday in the iconic NCA bandshell outdoor arena in the preliminary and final rounds.

GU Spirit scored highest in the areas of execution of fight song and overall impression.

After the preliminary round, the Panthers were in fifth of seven teams. Navarro College brought the heat and scored a preliminary score of 97 points. The Panthers had a preliminary score of 75.933.

The team increased their energy and showmanship during the final round but had 2.50 in deductions after a few minor falls in stunts and the pyramid.

The final scores and placements were Navarro College in first place with a score of 97.2, East Texas Baptist in second with an 83.35, North Carolina Wesleyan in third with an 81.86, Muskingum University in fourth with a 77.76, University of New England in fifth with a 76.69, Greenville University in sixth with a 73.40, and Lake Land College in seventh with a 71.16.

GU Panther Spirit had an incredible experience at NCA College Nationals and are so thankful for the gifts and abilities the Lord blessed them with.

GU Spirit Squad had a wonderful time bonding with GU Band and Color Guard throughout practices and competition.

After a successful 22-23 season, Panther Spirit is so excited for what is to come in future season.
