Football topped with late touchdown by Trinity International

DEERFIELD, Ill. - The football team was defeated 26-21 at Trinity International on Saturday afternoon in head coach Robbie Schomaker's return to Trinity International, his alma mater, as Greenville University's coach. A late 48 yard touchdown pass by Trinity International gave the Trojans a 26-21 lead with 77 seconds to play, and a drive by Greenville was stopped at the TIU28 with an interception with 12 seconds to go.

The Panthers took the early 7-0 lead with a 17 yard touchdown pass from Chase Butterfield to Seth Logan with 7:58 to play in the first quarter.

Early in the second period Trinity International scored to tie the game, and they took the lead with a touchdown with 7:29 to play in the half.

Before the game reached halftime, Logan caught an eight yard pass from Butterfield with 47 seconds left, and the Panthers carried a 14-13 lead to the intermission.

The two teams traded touchdowns the rest of the way. Trinity went on top 20-14 with a touchdown with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter, but Greenville regained the lead with 2:18 to play in the third quarter on Paul Garrett's 28 yard touchdown run before Trinity scored late in the fourth quarter for the win.

The teams were evenly matched in the contest with TIU slightly outgaining Greenville with a 413-409 advantage in total offense.

The Panthers gained 237 rushing yards in the game, led by Paul Garrett's 117 yards on 20 carries. Adrian Hinton tacked on 50 yards with 13 rushes

Butterfield ended the game by completing 18-of-31 passes for 172 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Logan caught five passes for 64 yards and two TD's.

Greenville's defense was led by Dewayne Garrett with eight tackles. Thomas Linnear added seven tackles.

Jaden Apple-Gibbs helped the GU defense with six tackles, one quarterback sack, and an interception.

Trevor Stewart also added a quarterback sack.

The Panthers (2-2) have completed their non-conference schedule, and they will travel to Martin Luther for an early test against the UMAC preseason favorite on Saturday, Oct. 2.
