Football season concludes with first round loss in NCAA playoffs

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Greenville University football team made their debut in the NCAA football playoffs and suffered a 69-7 defeat to conclude their history-making season.

Whitewater scored on their first possession of the game and recovered a fumble on the ensuing Greenville kickoff return to take the ball at the GU21. Two plays later, UWW scored their second TD and converted the extra point to go on top 14-0 with 11:05 to play in the first quarter.

After Greenville turned the ball over on downs at the UWW31, Whitewater capped an eight play drive with another touchdown and went ahead 21-0 following the extra point with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter.

Before the first quarter ended, Whitewater returned an interception 25 yards on the first play of GU's drive and held a 28-0 lead after the first quarter.

Greenville's defense managed to hold Whitewater off the scoreboard in the second quarter and received a touchdown from Paul Garrett after a lateral from Delrey Crowder with 3:43 to play in the first half.

UWW led Greenville 28-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, UWW outscored Greenville 27-0, and the Panthers allowed two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Overall, the Panthers collected 227 yards of total offense, including 155 passing yards from Chase Butterfield.

Butterfield completed 15-of-25 passes with a long pass of 45 yards to Matthew Tiger. Butterfield had a touchdown and interception.

Greenville's rushing attack was led by Garrett with 54 yards on 23 carries. Garrett also received credit for 56 receiving yards on six catches.

Tiger caught two passes for 54 yards.

Lakari Benjamin led the Panthers with eight tackles.

Greg Urbanc and Turjon McLaurin combined for a quarterback sack. McLaurin and Douglas Becker each had fumble recoveries for GU.

The Panthers finished the season with an overall record of 8-3, their second straight full season with a record of 8-3.
