Football defeated 32-12 by Northwestern in Homecoming Game

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The football team suffered a 32-12 loss to Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in GU's Homecoming game at Don Stout field. Greenville took a 9-7 lead into halftime, but the Panthers were outscored 25-3 in the second half to drop the UMAC contest.

Greenville scored their only touchdown of the game in the first quarter when Terrance Brown caught a 27 yard pass from Peyton Bates with 8:24 on the clock, but the Panthers did not convert the extra point.  The Panthers led 6-0 after the first quarter.

Northwestern established a 7-6 lead with a TD on the first play of the second quarter and held that advantage until Lucas Hermo made a 32 yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining in the first half.

The second half belonged to the Eagles.

UNW went up 14-9 with a touchdown with 14:15 to play in the third quarter, but GU cut the deficit to two points when Hermo made a 33 yard field goal for his second field goal of the game.

The Eagles scored once before the third quarter ended to establish a 21-12 lead, and UNW added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Overall, the Panthers managed to create 289 yards of total offense with 137 yards passing and 152 rushing.

Paul Garrett was GU's leading rusher with 21 carries for 108 yards.

Brown collected 56 receiving yards on four catches and ran the ball five times for 29 yards.

Elias Velasquez finished as the top tackler for the Panthers with eight, and Kourtland Harris, Lawrence Harris, and Braeden Wells all had seven tackles.

Wells and Thomas Linnear combined for a quarterback sack, and K. Harris, Wells, Xavier Mix, and William Nowlin all had one forced fumble. Wells, Nowlin, and Jalen Dowell recovered fumbles.

The Panthers (3-4, 0-3 UMAC) will go to Westminster for a game next Saturday at 12 p.m.
